I’m kind of a nerd, but sometimes I look up our website copy, and variations of SEO terms to check the competitiveness of keywords, our brand awareness, and overall online influence. The reason I look up copy, or keywords is because I tell our clients to do the same thing. Practice what you preach. I tell them to write original, compelling content/copy so they are unique. It’s one thing to be unique, but also your copy will tell people more about your style, and maybe how you are different from “the other guy(s).”
But most importantly, Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo factor in duplicate content. Google has a webmasters guide that tells you all the basic things to implement, common practices, and very general things that may help you on the Internet. Yes, the endless online sea of URL’s. Now, along with the general information every web designer should know Google also has a very complicated algorithm. One part of that algorithm is unique, compelling copy.
It’s not really rocket science, so I will share a few tips on what the process is.
Two things you can do to see if your work is plagiarized; a small litmus test to see what’s online. I will use website content from our web design business Suite 171. This is actually copy my wife wrote.
1. Copy a paragraph from your own copy. Then paste it into the Google search field. You should see a list of potential matches for combinations of terms or phrases similar to your own copy. Hopefully not exactly the same.
Example: “You might already know having a search engine optimized SEO friendly website design is only part of creating an inbound marketing tool for your business. Take the next step, invite people, communicate, and connect with your audience via Social Media Marketing. Web Marketing Services
2. You may also use copyscape.com to essentially do the same thing by entering your website URL. Example: www.suite171.com
- whalla!
Most of us are aware of the creative commons law and copyright infringement laws. First, let’s define ” plagiarize”
Source: merriam-webster.com – “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own : use (another’s production) without crediting the source”
Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism – ” Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the “wrongful appropriation,” “close imitation,” or “purloining and publication” of another author’s “language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions,” and the representation of them as one’s own original work,[1][2] but the notion remains problematic with nebulous boundaries.[3][4][5][6] The modern concept of plagiarism as immoral and originality as an ideal emerged in Europe only in the 18th century, particularly with the Romantic movement, while in the previous centuries authors and artists were encouraged to “copy the masters as closely as possible” and avoid “unnecessary invention.”[7][8][9][10][11][12]
LET’S SEE WHAT WE FIND TED!
The search engine placement results are in for my example. Ok – it took all of ten seconds. This is what I discovered about our own web design business in Fargo, North Dakota.
Our first search engine tip: Copy and paste a paragraph from your own copy.
“You might already know having a search engine optimized SEO friendly website design is only part of creating an inbound marketing tool for your business. Take the next step, invite people, communicate, and connect with your audience via Social Media Marketing. Web Marketing Services”
Our second search engine tip: use copyscape.com to essentially do the same thing by entering your website URL.

I’m really quite angry that a local person in Fargo would steal our work… &^^#@! get a life. WTH – Our search results indicated that Carlos Quintero; Location Fargo, ND is plagiarizing our copy. In 2007, I met Carlos Quintero at a Radio Fargo Moorhead, BOB95, Y94, KFGO, and THE FAN business appreciation event in Fargo North Dakota, and he seemed like a nice enough guy. Now that I see this, it would appear we have had a large impact on his little brain.
It’s not every day you find someone in the same location, the same business, web design, Internet marketing, and (SEO) – Search Engine Optimization, and find they have the cahoonas to copy exactly what you are doing. It’s very angering, but flattering in a way. I suppose some people don’t have the ability to, “Practice what they preach.”
I will call you out! Carlos Quintero, Stop steeling our website copy!

I don’t know about you but the last thing I would want to do is get in an SEO war with my name or business name, I’m not sure if Carlos Quintero thought that copying a site’s content would come back to haunt him or what. Seems silly to me, could spend a few hours writing the same thing in your own words. At least this way the content would be unique and more likely to rank for terms your established competition isn’t ranking for already.
