The short answer is yes. A website design contract or online marketing contract will help outline what exact services will be performed at any given time. You will want to read the fine print but in the long run this will protect you and provides you a plan of action. Our recommendation is to identify these things:
1. Website Deliverables
2. Time to complete the website & launch date
3. How many revisions or changes are included?
4. What exactly will the website services cost & what does maintaining the website cost
5. What domain name will you use (you should buy your own domain name)
6. Hosting – Who will host it, and how much?
7. Custom website design – How custom is the design, can I edit it or have another web professional edit my new website.
8. Content Management System – If you have a new website designed and it includes a CMS you NEED to ask if you are able to keep the admin area, content, and entire system built. This is the control factor… some designers use content management systems that are not easy to transfer. If you try to transfer your site you are left with only images and the text you came with.
9. Look at examples - Before you decide, review their work. If you are working with a custom website designer, see if it’s really custom work. For all online marketing & search engine marketing providers you should look at 4 or more examples the service provider has worked on. Is the work they produced found on page one in Google, MSN, or Yahoo? Also, you may want to review the tracking and results from any online or offline campaign they have worked on.
If you elect to do online marketing you should have goals and performance tracking in place to measure any online campaign. This means you should have one or more tools to report how many actual clicks you receive. Track every campaign’s performance.
