WordPress themes or child themes in Fargo

WordPress themes or child themes in Fargo

I would be interested to see what other web-developers/programmers in Fargo think about using wordpress themes or child themes and how they give credit to the actual developer that built the themes they use. I’m not opposed to the idea of using WordPress themes because they are like plug and play. They save us time because they come pre built with high impact colors, fonts, and layout styles that I don’t have to take the time to design or program them. Everything is provided. Sometimes this option is a better fit for a client because the themes are very inexpensive and the business has a limited budget to work with.

WordPress themes or child themes can be good. They are like stock photos for most people with little to no web development knowledge. There are quite a few Theme forest themes that are low budget alternatives to custom website design. For example: You can use WordPress software, a $55 theme forest theme (child theme) along with some minor customization and you’re good to go. This could be an option if you don’t need a web developer or custom website design. One good thing with this option is that the web development and design is already complete. No web designer/developer required – your really just filling in the blanks or uploading your content. Since everything is already developed this process is just customization or customizing it to fit your content.

If all website designers in Fargo use wordpress then it’s similar to selling the same product or type of car. I’m not saying WordPress is good or bad as we have used it many times. I think it becomes more of a problem when it comes to these types of designers that use WordPress, theme forest themes, or child themes. How can they possibly set themselves apart from the next “dealer” or website designer. They all offer the same product service and technology when in reality, the product they sell is open source, and process can easily be replicated by just about anyone.

Let’s say for example, all website designers in Fargo were car dealers and they all selling the same vehicle. This means you have the option to buy this product which is the very same car from each of them. This car gets the same MPG and has the very same engine. You can get it in any color or style imaginable and you can even add upgrades like Bluetooth, WiFi , or special order fifty inch rims. You know you need one and have seen a specific style of car you need and want, but you also want to add your own personal touch to it. After all you do want to stand out from everyone that has the same car. Now, all you have to do is just decide on what you are willing to pay for the very same product and technology. Right?

I will be the first to admit, this dealer type designer has been an issue for us because people do not understand they are buying a “product” or theme anyone can buy for $55. I as web developers we spend time writing and developing software and applications we can call our own and don’t want to sell the same product everyone else is.

Don’t get me wrong, I like using WordPress for some projects, and usually we code or program a unique child theme that will work with wordpress. This is because we don’t have to recreate the content management system WordPress already has available. Pre made themes seem to be alright because all you really have to do is fill in the blanks or upload content. When you buy a theme everything is already developed and the process becomes more about customization or customizing it to fit your content. Personally, I think when you buy pre made theme forest theme for a client it should be called theme customization and not custom web development.
