Suite 171 is a Favorite Place on Google

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

google-favorite-placeHave you ever found yourself walking by a store, been intrigued by the display window, and then realized that it’s after hours? Now what? How do you find out more about this store or business? If you happen to see a small black-and-white bar code in the front window, you’re in luck!

Google has created an easier way to get information on local businesses. Whether you are looking for store hours and phone numbers, or products and reviews, this little sticker can get you the information. So, this sounds great, but how does it work?

This little sticker is a fully functional QR code, or bar code. When you scan the sticker with one of many compatible phones, Google gives you the information. This will come in pretty handy when shopping or traveling!

This is the way that technology is heading, but the process is still pretty new. At this point, local businesses have to be selected by Google to hold one of these stickers. How does a business get selected to bear one of these bar-code stickers? Google states that:

‘Companies with this sticker are among the 100,000 most searched-for companies on Google.com and Google Maps, considered to be one of the “Favorite Places on Google”.’ (Diaz)

So, if your business meets the criteria of being one of the most searched-for companies, then you will receive a bar-code sticker to display in your window. Google is utilizing this new marketing tool in order to enhance search results and boost the support of local businesses. So, when you are out shopping and come across a black and white bar-code, try scanning it with your phone! You may be surprised at the information you get. This is just one more way to market your business that is cheap, easy and effective.

If you’re wondering if and when your business will receive its Google bar code, give Suite 171 a call – 701-478-5955. We can lead your business to the kind of online success Google is looking for in its selection process when identifying your community’s favorite places.

3 steps to see where your business website is indexed in Google Bing or Yahoo

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I think every time we meet with clients they ask three basic questions.

1. Where is my website placed in search engines?
2. Why can’t people find my business website?
3. Why don’t I receive leads from my website?

search engine placement and seoWe review our own placement in comparison to other like businesses in our industry, but our local placement hasn’t changed for a few years. Quite a few website design and search engine marketing businesses are located in North Dakota and if you do a search for the term “website design Fargo” you can get a better idea of where Suite 171 is indexed in search engines.

In general, we are geo locating our Google search and looking for results based off of searching a specific keyword and including a city, state, or general location. I would say seven out of ten internet searches will contain a specific location. In my professional opinion most people will search for a product or service locally, but some users may not geo locate a search term.

What is really remarkable when we search for just the term “website design” with no location, there are over 225 million listings. So, where we place worldwide? It’s interesting to see different results in specific search engines like Yahoo, Bing, Google, or MAC vs. PC, laptop and various desktop computers.

This is one example.

Google, Internet Explorer 8, Results 1 - 10 of about 225,000,000 for website design

Suite171.com is listed or indexed in Google on page three out of 225 million other indexed websites for the keywords “website design”. It looks like the search engine placement changes every third day but still remains between pages two or three.

Three steps to measure where your business is indexed in search engines.

1. Select a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing

2. Enter a two or three word term, keyword, or phrase you would expect visitors to search for. Meaning: how people would find you. Use something other than your business name because people will not always know who you are. In most cases they are looking for a product or service.

3. Add your city or state to the search term, keyword, or phrase. Also, try not to Geo locate your search.

You should evaluate the results. If you are on page one you are doing exceptional, but if you are unable to find your website you will need to update your website. Most people or businesses are concerned about where they are placed and see value in people contacting them to buy services or products through their website. On the other hand, some businesses haven’t realized they should be receiving sales leads.

Search Engine Optimized Website

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing - It’s important to maintain your branding and identity, but also use your website as a tool. You can still have your site designed exactly how you vision it but also can work as a marketing vehicle for your business, and still be presentable.

keywordsSearch Engine Usage Information: Nielson/Net Ratings of May 2008:
59.3% - Google | 16.9% - Yahoo | 13.3% - MSN | 4.1% - AOL

This means 94% of all searches going through four search engines, and a majority going through Google.

Tip: Google Trends is also a quality tool to research what keywords people are searching for. This is an exceptional tool when researching your online keywords for search engine placement, and search engine optimization.

For Google, 72.3% of visitors are natural or organic SEO listings. These are non paid listings. 27.7% use the paid search engine marketing SEM plans like AdWords etc.

MSN is quite different. 28.8% of visitors are organic, and 71.2% are paid listings.

You have seen all the paid ads from Google, MSN, and Yahoo… the ones on the top and right side of the page. They do work but can cost quite a bit depending on what you want to pay for someone to click on your ad. This could be as little as .10 up to $2/$3 depending on how many other people are in the same market.

You have two choices. Pay for placement or you can have your site organically placed with the correct design and search engine optimization. If your site is search engine friendly then you can implement a search engine marketing plan SEM. What does this look like?

Example: Local target market selection, keyword placement, content, link building, and evaluate your positioning after changes are implemented.

We redesigned a website in a content management system and seen almost immediate results. When the site was redesigned it was on page one, two, and page three of all major search engines in seven days vs. on page fifty and not being found at all.
